Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 hits theaters at midnight tonight, and it's poised to earn a few box office records of its own (some which currently belong to the Twilight Saga). The journey to get here, to "The End," has been long and fruitful. Harry Potter has been successful to unprecedented levels in both its literary and movie spheres - with seven books and eight films, all well loved by a devoted fanbase - and it's set an example for everyone, up to and including Twilight Saga filmmakers.
USA Today has a new piece about Harry Potter's impact on the movie world, and three of the Twilight Saga's filmmakers offered up their thoughts on the matter.
Chris Weitz (who has experience directing two major book-to-film translations, The Golden Compass and The Twilight Saga: New Moon) had this to say:
"The impact of the Potter series has been tremendous in that it has essentially become the idea of a modern franchise . . . They latched onto something that has its own sequels built in. Now everyone is looking for a literary property that extends enough for them to keep on building . . . It’s led to this speculative bubble in mystical young-adult fiction. Twilight found its own way to hit upon the hunger for the supernatural and a particular time of life. But if you look at the bookshelves now, half of what is coming out in (young-adult) fiction is about a werewolf or a vampire or angels or demons. The other half is about magic and wizardry."
Melissa Rosenberg (screenwriter for The Twilight Saga films), meanwhile, praised the work done by Steve Kloves in adapting all but one of the Harry Potter books into script:
